Decorating Tips
Patty Marty, owner of RibbonChic LLC, is one embroiderer who's seeing a demand for embroidery tumblers. While most of her clients ask for monogrammed mugs, she says embroiderers shouldn't be shy about embroidering logos, mascots and other designs as people are buying them and they're easy to embroider. Want some decorating advice? See her tips below:
1. Cut the fabric larger than the template suggests. Marty says she always cuts her fabric a little larger than the insert to prevent the edges from fraying during decoration. After it's monogrammed, she attaches the fabric to the insert with a 505 Spray and then trims off any excess fabric.
2. Use a backing that can be easily removed. Marty prefers to use an iron on backing with her monograms. "I really like it because it just holds the fabric down," she says. Recently, the company decreased the insert space to make the mugs more airtight. "I used to leave the backing on, but now I remove it," she says. "You still get a nice monogram, but that way you don't have the extra width to fit into the mug."
3. Don't make the monogram too large. Marty's monograms usually measure about 3.5 inches tall and wide. "I wouldn't exceed 5 inches, as the monogram could look overpowering," she says. "Also if you've got a denser stitch, you'll have a tougher time trying to fit it in the mug."
4. Don't worry about the edges. Because the mugs feature a stainless steel top and bottom, the edges of the fabric are hidden. "I know some embroiderers like to finish or serge the edges, but there's no need," she says. "Save some time and leave them raw."
